Ode to Sleep have teamed up with the Kent Hunt Saboteurs and here is why you should get involved too!
The Hunt Saboteurs Association (HSA) was formed in the winter of 1963 and first went into action in South Devon on Boxing Day…and the rest is history.
Hunting with hounds was supposed to have been banned in England & Wales in February 2005, and in Scotland, several years earlier. However, now the fuss and media attention has died down, most hunts are carrying on as they did before. The police have never known much about hunting other than how to try to protect it, so we never had much faith in them changing sides.
Hunts around the country are arrogantly continuing their slaughter in the name of sport, in the hope or knowledge that the people in power don't really care. Hence the ongoing need for HUNT SABOTEURS. Around 60 groups within the UK are out every week through the various hunting seasons, stopping the slaughter of foxes, hares, deer and even mink, as well as physically opposing game shooting.
Post THE HUNTING ACT, often a hunt will simply revert to “Trail Hunting” (which doesn't actually exist, it’s a simply a smokescreen for illegal hunting) once sabs turn up, or even pack up completely for the day. Other hunts will simply arrogantly continue to hunt live quarry, and sabs will use a variety of tactics to confuse the hounds, using whips, hunting horns and a “gizmo” (a tape recording of hounds in cry), to take control of the hounds, in order let the hunted wild animal escape. We also use cameras and drones, and the evidence captured has led to many hunters being convicted…but its not enough-we need a TOTAL BAN.
Nobody in the HSA is paid-we are just a group of like minded individuals who care enough to give up our spare time to use “Non Violent Direct Action” to spare our wildlife from these sadistic, callous thugs.
Why is it more important than ever to get involved NOW?
In Kent-we have almost won. All the once mighty foxhound and beagle packs have amalgamated after years of pressure, and the last remaining fox-hunters THE KENT HOUNDS are in crisis, both financially and due to lack of landowner support, and we can finish them with your help.
The current Labour government recently repeated its intention to ban “trail hunting”-legislation to this effect has not yet been introduced to Parliament, but we remain hopeful, and a great deal of work to lobby MP’s is being done by the HSA and other animal welfare groups.
A real danger lies with the rising popularity of Reform UK. Leader Nigel Farage (often pictured out supporting illegal hunting) launched a scathing attack on Labour's plans to ban trail hunting, branding it an "attack on rural communities”, and their manifesto pledges to-“Protect Country Sports-these increase investment and help conservation of our environment. They boost rural jobs, communities and local economies”, and the pro hunting Countryside Alliance were a noticable presence at their recent party conference. So there is no time to lose!

About the new EP: The concept for Undertone Of Violence explores narratives that have an underlying malignant story or threat that is not immediately visible or intended to be noticed. The songs on this EP each explore various interpretations of this concept, anchored in mental health. The feeling of doom that bubbles to the surface, often for no obvious reason, and exploring its origin in our individual human experience. ‘Maelstrom’ is a visceral battle, the constant push and pull, the fight we each have with our own demons. A fight we have become good at concealing. The friends we lose to these battles are often the ones we didn't know were struggling. ‘Emancipate’ speaks of the 'invisible hold' trauma can have over us on a daily basis. The echo of those who caused it, seeping into our everyday, undetected by even those closest to you. ‘Lay down’ laments and celebrates the finality of life. The knowing that we too will die is always present. Even in our greatest moments there waits an aftertaste of the inescapable ending.
Ode To Sleep are an East Kent DIY PUNK trio, formed in October 2019. Jade Wilson (Drums) and Liz Hayward (Vocals/Bass) released Ode to Sleep’s debut EP ‘Night Terrors’ in 2020 and second EP ‘Are you awake?’ in 2022 . Chris Livings joined the band in late 2021. Since the addition of guitarist Chris Livings, Ode to Sleep have refined their sound to a bigger and better than ever version of themselves and have just released their third EP 'Undertone Of Violence' as a complete trio.
